Organizing under the washroom sink – The Quick Fix

Most people have that pesky drain pipe under the sink, which doesn’t allow you to put a shelf so you can make maximum use of the space. There is a ton of real estate we are not taking advantage of under the sink – and lord knows we ALL need more storage space in the washroom. If you share a washroom with someone, you know what I’m talking about, right? πŸ˜‰ Well, there’s an item I love to use that allows you to get around those pipes easily.

Before - check out all the vertical wasted space.

It seems that many of us have under-cabinet space in their washroom just like the photo above. There’s a lot of space, but somehow you find yourself searching for your items again and again. I promise, this time-wasting task is not necessary. You can see from the photo above, this person has tried to get organized by using shoe boxes to contain items. There’s nothing wrong with trying this, but let’s just try my method and see if it may feel a little more user-friendly.

First, you need to empty everything out of there. In doing that, you will definitely find some expired lotions, make-up, and other items that may be a little too “stuck together” with toothpaste to keep. Discard all items that you are comfortable with(I’m not about pressuring people to get rid of all their items, but let’s be honest, some things gotta go!) Don’t worry, you are not a hoarder if you still have your retainer from the 9th grade, but I suggest now is the time to let go – toss it. Even the most diligent of organizers will probably find a few too many things they may be holding on to, in the washroom – you know – those samples you got from Shopper’s Drug Mart or those little “extra gifts” of tiny perfumes that came with your purchase…. Once you discard old items, you will easily be able to guage how much stuff is left that you will need to find a home for.

Next, head out to purchase items needed. You can find the expandable under-the-sink shelf at Solutions or even less expensive at Canadian Tire. Right now I think Canadian Tire has it on sale for $16.99. I went to my local Dollar Store in order to purchase all other baskets and storage solutions. All storage items at the Dollar Store were less than $15. So, for less than $35 you can feel great about your organized, uncluttered space under your sink.

The expandable under-cabinet shelf organizer is a great item. It’s adjustable in many ways. The shelves can be at whatever height fits your organizing task(within about 18 inches). It expands or contracts to fit different width cabinets, up to 28 inches wide. So, if you move or rent a place, it’s easy to take with you to another location. I moved – I used it in the kitchen, but now it’s in a washroom, so it will adjust to your needs. There are no tools required, so just pop it out of the box and a few minutes later, you’re in business πŸ™‚ p.s. I’m not making any money for this plug – I just really like the product for a quick fix.

Once you have your shelf in place, you can do this organizing in many different ways; separating types of items, or even for the people who share the washroom. I have done a bit of both. There are two girls sharing this washroom. You can see from the photo below, that I have labeled each a basket. This makes life easy in the morning and has the basics for their daily routine inside. It is up to you what you put in yours. This way you can just grab your basket, pull it out and tada, there’s just about everything you need to get your day going, quicker. I have made a couple ‘sharing’ bins. They have one in the middle labeled “Dental Care”. On the bottom shelf there’s one labeled as lotions. It’s up to however you live life, as to how you decide to label yours. There are a couple small pull-out drawers for miscellaneous items like hair ties, Q-tips, etc.. Whatever you put in your containers, bins, or drawers please make sure and label them to make your life more efficient. I’m all about putting time back in your hands. Just think, if you can get back just a few minutes a day for everything you get organized… well, just imagine πŸ™‚

So that’s my quick fix in the picture above. It is so much easier than the first picture you noticed in this post. I hope you will find a way to make this information work for you. I want your life to be a bit more ‘Zen’ each time you get a post from me. πŸ™‚

Thanks for tuning in
